She may have been lying in a hospital bed when the clock struck midnight on Wednesday but for Thuy Kieu Tran it was the perfect way to see in the new year.

A few hours later, when others were winding down after a big night out, the celebrations really began for Mrs Tran and husband Huan Le.

Their second child Hayden Le was born at 2.35am at Swan District Hospital yesterday, making him one of the first babies to enter the world in Perth this year.

Mrs Tran said she had been hoping for a New Year's Day baby since her last visit to the doctor.

"When I saw the doctor last they said he could be coming out any time," she said. "My due date was January 4 but I was praying for Hayden to be born on the first."

Born after seven hours labour, Hayden weighed 3.23kg and measured 49cm long.

"I think it's really special to have a Christmas baby or a new year's baby," Mrs Tran said.

Another baby was born just 13 minutes after Hayden at Armadale Hospital.

At 4.32am, a baby was born in Fiona Stanley Hospital's maternity unit. Maternity, gynaecology and neonatal services opened at the new hospital last month.
