2015 wish list: Kerbside recycling

I moved to Geraldton in November 2013 after getting a job at The Geraldton Guardian.

On my first night in Geraldton, in my new house I asked my housemate where the recycling bin was and was shocked at her answer.

Geraldton is one of many regional towns that don’t have a kerbside recycling program and the City of Greater Geraldton has made it clear it is unlikely in the near future.

When previously questioned on the topic the City has said it would lead to higher rates, which ratepayers don’t want.

Despite an increase in rates, recycling leads to less landfill, less litter and overall a cleaner city, something I’m sure all house owners want.

Geraldton is such a beautiful place to live, but there is a significant litter problem.

Although recycling can seem like a waste of time it can help reduce pollution, the size of landfills, conservation of the environment, save energy and money.

Geraldton is behind the times when it comes to waste practices.

It should be moving into a green future and setting up recycling around town.

Introducing recycling can only have a positive impact on the community.

For 2015 I want the City to take another look at kerbside recycling.
