Driver selfies, video the latest dangerous trend

Risky and dangerous driving behaviours are on the rise among young drivers, with "selfies" from behind the wheel emerging as a disturbing trend. Research by insurer AAMI has revealed a pattern of "terrifying" behaviours and clear evidence that safety messages about the dangers of fatigue, distraction and speeding are not getting through. AAMI spokesman Reuben Aitchison said a survey of drivers aged 18-24 revealed that one-in-seven had taken a "selfie" or a video while they were driving.

"This is a disturbing trend emerging among young drivers and shows that talking and texting are only part of the problem posed by smartphones nowadays," he said. "It needs to stop."
