Thieves used a stolen earthmover to rip an ATM from a bank in the Great Southern on the weekend.

Albany detectives are investigating the theft of the heavy machinery and the cash-dispensing machine.

A police spokesman said officers were called to the Yougenup Road bank building about Sunday this morning in relation to the damage caused to the building. After arriving, they found the ATM was missing.

"It appears earthmoving machinery was used to damage the building," the spokesman said.

"It is believed the equipment had been stolen from the local shire depot."

Yesterday detectives interviewed a man in relation to the theft but no charges have been layed.

Detectives would like to hear from anyone who saw earthmoving equipment being moved in the Gnowangerup area since Friday afternoon, and anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Gnowangerup area overnight.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
