Carer son gives mum strength

Alexander Tanasijevic would do anything in the world for his mother Branka Smiljanic.

The 11-year-old Bellevue boy is the primary carer for Ms Smiljanic, who has multiple sclerosis.

"Alex is special, in so many ways - he is my reason to fight, to get up when I fall," Ms Smiljanic said. "Not even older kids take on such responsibility caring for a parent."

Alexander is a finalist in this year's Young People Who Care awards, which recognise young West Australians who devote their time to caring for others.

Each day he provides meals, medication and company to his mother, who finds it hard to walk without the aid of a walking frame. "I usually feed the dog, open the gate, take out the garbage, vacuum, get Mum medicine and coffee," Alex said.

"I make food on the stove, I get the iron out for Mum and I help with the mopping.

"I water the plants and wash the car and help her pay the bills at the shops." Alexander also spends time researching her illness.

Alex has cared for his mother since he was eight.

The youngster said he didn't think twice about his dedication to his mother because she meant everything to him.

The Young People Who Care Awards are announced on December 9.
