Driver freed after car crushed by truck on Princes Freeway

Car crushed by truck on Princes Freeway

A driver is lucky to be alive after his car was crushed by a truck in a horror crash on a Melbourne freeway.

The Footscray man, believed to be in his forties, miraculously survived the Thursday morning peak-hour accident on the Princes Freeway at Point Cook.

Three cranes were brought in to rescue the driver who was trapped in the wreckage for almost three hours.

He was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital with chest and leg injuries but is in a stable condition.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said the truck's wheels were on the roof of the car above the driver's side.

"Initially we couldn't see anything from the waist down," Mr Bentley said.

"(It's) incredibly lucky given the truck is on top of the car, that he hasn't been killed."

Traffic in the area has been brought to a standstill, with the freeway expected to remain closed outbound until well into the afternoon.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area.
