Bed fire causes $30k damage

A mattress fire has caused about $30,000 damage to a house in Nickol.

Karratha police and emergency services were called to Gething Court at 1am one morning last week after a metal cot and mattress was allegedly lit on fire in an outdoor carport.

West Pilbara Detectives' Detective Senior Constable Greg Cunningham said the home's residents were asleep while the bed was burning and woke to the smell of smoke.

"The mattress has caused some damage to the carport roof and has gotten into the roof cavity and we think 25 per cent of the house has been affected with smoke damage," he said. "We're treating it as suspicious as there were no electrical, or other, items that could account for it."

Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service Brigade contained the fire and prevented it from inflicting further damage.

A fridge was set alight in a Nickol carport on Peregrine Link last month but police are treating the two fires as separate incidents.

Anyone with information about either fire can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
