Fremantle senior assistant Peter Sumich is staying with the Dockers after withdrawing from the race to be the new Western Bulldogs senior coach.

The 46-year-old told Fremantle officials last night that he would be remaining with the club for 2015.

Sumich was originally due to be interviewed this week by a selection panel, including former Eagles teammate John Worsfold, that has been charged with appointing a replacement for sacked coach Brendan McCartney.

The goalkicking record holder at West Coast has cited family reasons for his decision to pull out.

It is understood Sumich’s family would not have made the move east if he had been appointed.

The decision removes an obstacle for other leading candidates, with North Melbourne assistant Leigh Tudor among those vying for the role.

McCartney’s senior assistant Brett Montgomery and Hawthorn defensive line coach Luke Beveridge are other candidates believed to have made the club’s coaching shortlist.

The new coach is expected to be unveiled by November 17.
