A neighbour of a Roleystone house gutted by fire this evening used a hose to try to extinguish the blaze as flames licked the edge of his property.

Gus Royer said he was alerted by his father about the fire in the two-storey property next door and rushed outside to help before fire crews arrived at the Heather Road house.

"I was running around grabbing the hose to try and spray it down... it was just dad and I at the time, it just looked real scary," he said.

Police Arson Squad will investigate the cause of the fire which is believed to be suspicious.

The home is understood to have been vacant when the fire started.

Concerned neighbours lined the street as crews spent 40 minutes trying to control the fire.

Mr Royer said he feared the fire would spread to adjoining trees and believed their home could have been destroyed if they had not stepped in to help.

"Another minute or two and everything would have been gone," he said.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services crews were last night combing the property to determine how the fire started.
