Dragons roar into season

Dragon’s player Rhiannon Edmonds defends Seafollie’s Sophie Morton during Hedland Water Polo’s season opener on the weekend. The competition is back up and running after being put on hold for two years to allow for pool renovations.

Four men's and four women's teams took part in the opening round of this year's Hedland water polo season at South Hedland Aquatic Centre on Friday night.

In the first men's game of the night, it was the Dragons who set their premiership campaign off well, with a solid 11-3 win over the Barracudas.

The game was a tight tussle early and seemed set for a close finish.

But the reigning premiers flexed their muscle in the second half and pulled away to an easy victory.

In the first game of the women's competition, White Pointers showed they will be a team to beat this season with an 11-2 victory over Dragons.

With a lot of new faces in the pool, it was the experienced Pointers that took control and cruised to an easy victory.

In the second men's game, Blackstars and White Pointers renewed old rivalries with a hard-fought 9-9 draw.

The Pointers surged late to draw the match.

In the last match of the night Mantas women forfeited by a lack of numbers.

It handed victory to the Seafollies, who turned out in force and seem set for a great season.
