Olympic dream for Broome swimmer
Broome athlete Sami Savu will swim his heart out today for a chance to secure a spot representing Australia at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles next year.
Sami, 18, is representing Broome in swimming at the Special Olympics Australia National Games in Melbourne this week.
He is one of 900 athletes competing nationally and will take part in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle and the 50m backstroke.
Beginning his athletic journey last year as Broome's first Special Olympics representative, Sami has continued to turn heads.
He won four silver medals in his first attempt at the WA Disabled Sports Association Swimming State Championships and took home another three gold medals and a silver this year.
He is one of 83 athletes from WA to compete in the games, the biggest team the State has had compete nationally.
Sami and parents Tui and Helen acknowledged the support of local swimming instructors, clubs and organisations to help him on his way to fulfilling his dream.
