Survivors share stories at breakfast

There were humbling moments, a few giggles and even tears as two cancer survivors addressed a room full of Broome women at last week's National Breast Cancer Foundation Pink Breakfast event.

Mothers Natalie Upson and Alison Reid were guest speakers at the fundraiser, held by the Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa.

Having been diagnosed with breast cancer six months ago, Mrs Upson told her story publicly for the first time.

In an emotional address, she recounted the day she received life-changing news and was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer after a mammogram.

Mrs Upson underwent surgery a week later and described the coping mechanisms she adopted to get through the treatment. Despite experiencing "daunting, painful and frustrating" moments, Mrs Upson said there was never a day she did not feel positive and found healing in the "many silver linings" she encountered during her ordeal.

"I really do believe attitude makes a massive difference," she said.

"It can make this journey so much easier."

While she still has treatment to go, Mrs Upson said she continued to count her blessings.

Meanwhile, Alison Reid discovered she had breast cancer in 2009.

After being sent for a biopsy, tests revealed a lump on the side of her breast.

The next day, Ms Reid underwent surgery and had 18 lymph glands removed.

Four came back with cancer cells. A friend whisked her away to Bali before she started treatment.

What Ms Reid didn't know was she would suffer another blow further down the track.

About a week into the radiation treatment, she was in a car accident and fractured her spine.

She had to wear a brace for three months, but continued her cancer treatment and rehabilitation.

Despite everything life threw at her, Ms Reid bounced back.

A fortnight ago, her oncologist gave her the all-clear for a fifth year.

Throughout the morning, guests socialised over breakfast and dug deep to raised more than $3500 for the charity.

Broome resident Jenny Bloom won a $1000 Allure voucher.
