Secret Harbour lifesavers set for summer

Secret Harbour Life Saving Club members Samantha Lowe, 15, Amily Pugh, 14, Stuart Reeves and Sean Phllips, 15, encourage beachgoers to use its Beachsafe app this summer.

Secret Harbour Life Saving Club hopes new technology and increased training will help deliver another safe summer.

After winning its fourth WA Patrol Club of the Year award last season, communications officer Stuart Reeves said the club was excited to be back on the beach.

He said the club held its first patrol last week, and with 120 patrolling members, was prepared for a big season after last year's increased beach attendance at almost 74,000.

Mr Reeves said during the off-season he had worked to get the club's Beachsafe application live to post information about where patrol flags would be erected and what conditions the beach experienced each day.

"Young and migrant families are moving to the region, which has increased our need for wider roving patrols because they're swimming outside of the flags but aren't always familiar with ocean currents and dangers," he said.

"This beach can be a dangerous beach at times and we have big problems with moving rips.

"We want to offer the best service for the community by focusing south a lot more and maybe come 2015-16 season we will have an outpost down Singleton way."

This month the club's lifesavers will be patrolling from 9am-noon on Sundays, extending to Saturdays in November.

The weekday lifeguard service will begin next month from 6am-11am and all day in December.
