No mechanical fault on truck: Vic court

Police found no mechanical fault in a truck involved in a Victorian collision which killed four members of a family, a court has heard.

Earlier in proceedings the court heard that the accused Jobandeep Gill blamed jammed gears for going through a stop sign at Catani, southeast of Melbourne, on February 28, and ploughing into a car with a family of five inside.

Killed were Stephen Beckett, 37, his wife Jade, 33, and two of their three children Ella, six, and William, aged two.

Only their nine-year-old son Sam survived.

Giving evidence at a committal hearing for Gill, Sergeant Leigh Booth of the mechanical investigation unit said he focused on the truck's transmission, clutch and brake systems.

"My inspection did not reveal any mechanical fault with this vehicle which would have caused or contributed to the collision," Sgt Booth said in his statement tendered to the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

"My particular focus has been as a result of being advised ... that a claim has been made by the driver of the vehicle at some stage, that it has jammed in gear immediately prior to the collision."

Gill, 27, of Noble Park, is contesting charges including four counts of culpable driving.

The hearing, before Magistrate Greg Robinson, continues.
