Mum faces prospect of newborn murder trial

A Brisbane woman will learn next year if she will stand trial for murdering two of her babies, including one whose body was allegedly found in a washing machine.

Sursaree Surmila Chand and her husband Ronal Vikash Chand are facing two charges of murder and two charges of concealing the birth of a child.

The body of a newborn girl was allegedly found in a washing machine at a Bald Hills home in January 2012. The couple has also been charged with murdering and hiding the birth of another baby in 2010.

Mrs Chand, who is behind bars, was declared fit to stand trial earlier this year and her case was mentioned briefly in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Her lawyer Eva Johns told the court two witnesses would be cross-examined during Mrs Chand's committal hearing, which was set down for January 28 next year.

Following the hearing a magistrate is expected to determine whether there is enough evidence for Mrs Chand to stand trial.
