Man jailed, woman fined for 'racist road rage' attack in Canberra

A man has been jailed and a woman fined over what the ACT's Chief Magistrate has described as a racist road rage incident.

The altercation began when the victim's car cut off a vehicle in Fyshwick in November, the ACT Magistrates Court heard.

Canberra residents Daniel Forsyth, 29, and Samantha Carpenter, 23, then forced the man's car off the road before punching him.

In July, Forsyth was found guilty of offences including furious driving, assault and possession of a dangerous weapon, while Carpenter was found guilty of assault.

Carpenter received a fine and Forsyth was sentenced to 10 months jail, suspended after three months.

Sentencing the pair, Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker said it was a highly concerning incident and could not be tolerated.

Forsyth continued to deny hitting the victim as he was being taken away by ACT Corrective Service officers.

Earlier, the court heard there had been an underlying racist element in the crime and Forsyth had made disparaging comments about people from India and threatened the victim with a knife.
