Mitch Marsh in Aust ODI squad

WA all-rounder Mitch Marsh has been named in the Australia one-day squad for this month’s cricket tri-series in Zimbabwe.

Marsh is joined by spin bowler Nathan Lyon, who returns to the one-day set-up after a two-year absence.

“He’s capable of opening the bowling or coming on through the middle overs and can do so with good pace which is pleasing,” selector Rod Marsh said of Mitch Marsh.

“It’s the sign of a true all-rounder if they can be in the side for either their bowling or batting and he is certainly getting close to that which is great for Australian cricket.”

The pair were named in a 14-man squad for the tour, which includes four matches plus a final on September 6.

Lyon has only played two ODIs - his last against West Indies in March 2012.

“Nathan has done very well in Test match cricket but first came under notice through his performances in short form cricket,“ Rod Marsh said.

“He bowled well in last year’s Ryobi Cup and having not played an ODI since early 2012, the NSP (national selection panel) is keen to see him in action again.”

Mitch Marsh, fellow allrounder Ben Cutting and seam bowler Kane Richardson earned spots in the squad thanks to their recent form for Australia A in Darwin.

But batsman Phil Hughes has missed out despite his history-making double century against South Africa A last week.

The squad will go into camp in Brisbane from August 16, before departing for their first tour of Zimbabwe in a decade on August 20.
