Quirky cars tackle charity challenge

A children's family cancer charity is organising an outback motoring adventure which will travel more than 2000km from Kalbarri to Dampier early next month.

WesCarpade is Camp Quality's WA outback motoring adventure and will feature a fleet of 18 quirky vehicles travelling through the Pilbara between August 3 and 9.

The event has attracted entrants from all over the State, with each of their cars at least 20 years old.

Teams have to spend the year dressing the car up, making it roadworthy and encouraging people to sponsor them for their week-long adventure.

The aim is to raise an engine-busting $350,000 - enough for Camp Quality to support a further 87 families who have a child living with cancer for the next year through their resilience-building programs.

Former GWN7 weatherman Chris "Millsy" Mills is again taking part.

"This is the third Camp Quality WesCarpade I've been on and I love it every single year," he said. "We get to dress up like fools and drive through the beautiful outback.

"But most importantly, we're raising essential funds for a great cause - helping Camp Quality to create a better life for kids living with cancer."

This year WesCarpade sets off from Kalbarri on August 3 and passes through Yallalong, Ballythunna, Gascoyne Junction, Eudamullah, Mt Augustus, Mt Vernon, Newman and Marble Bar, before finishing in Dampier.

Along the way drivers will pull into towns in a fanfare of sirens, horns, water cannons, lights and colour. The entrants will also visit local schools with the Camp Quality puppets.

WesCarpade is the culmination of year-long fundraising by dedicated and hard-working fundraisers. Including the support crew, a total of 76 people will be taking part in the outback adventure.
