Blazing grass fire burns through industrial site

Firefighters faced billowing clouds of smoke and strong winds as they managed to control a grass fire which burned out of control in western Sydney.

The fire broke out in grassland behind an automotive site in Kingswood at about 12:44pm on Friday, threatening factories and an industrial shed full of cars.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales said the fast-moving grass fire quickly impacted on the industrial area near Richmond Rd.


Nearly 100 firefighters attended the scene with 17 fire trucks.

At least one factory unit, multiple shipping containers and a number of trucks and cars were lost, Fire and Rescue New South Wales said.

Emergency services contained the fire on three sides before attacking the main fire in a bid to protect a bank of LPG cylinders.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.

Fire and Rescue NSW advised residents in the affected areas take the following precautions:

• Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
• Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
• Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
• Remove washing from clothes lines
• Ensure pets have a protected area
• Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on
• If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of

breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
