First on 7: Development applications have long been a point of contention, pitting neighbour against neighbour.

But now there is a new way for homeowners to track those applications online.

7News Sydney has been given exclusive access to a new online tool to help residents keep tabs on what is planned for their suburb.

Google Street View is a crucial tool for nosey neighbours and keen investors. It is a sneak peek of every neighbourhood, without leaving your keyboard.

But what if you could see what a road might be like in the future?

Today the State Government revealed to 7News its new ePlanning website.

For homeowners it is all about peace of mind. The new website shows the kind of houses people are allowed to build from street to street and the details of any development applications that have been already lodged.

It also tells you which DIY projects need planning permission and those that do not.

Planning Minister Pru Goward said: “It means the purchaser and homeowner can find out for themselves confirm what the zoning is, what's planned for around them, what the future holds and they don’t have to rely on real estate agents."

The online maps replace thousands of hard copies stored in local councils and allow users to set-up automatic alerts.
