Family pray for Sydney teen in coma after being hit by car

A 13-year-old girl is fighting for life after being hit by a car at Narraweena in Sydney's north.

She was running across six lanes of traffic with a group of friends when she was struck.

Mathilda Vazille never made it to the party she was heading to on Saturday night.

She was hit by a black convertible on Warringah Road around 7.15pm.

The teenager was thrown several metres, and landed on a footpath.

John Gauci ran to help and gave her first aid before she was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital.

"I kind of grabbed her head without moving it too much, cleared her airway, and other witnesses were on the phone calling the ambulance," Gauci told 7News on Sunday.

Police cleared a nearby oval so the CareFlight team, using night vision goggles, could land.

It's believed one car slowed in time, but the driver of the car that hit Mathilda didn't see the girls until was too late.

John Gauci said the driver was distraught.

"He was saying, you know, I didn't see them, I didn't see them, and you can understand he was behind the other car."

The driver has undergone drug and alcohol testing.

Her friends who witnessed the accident are devastated.

"She's just perfect and everyone that speaks to her and knows her would agree with me, and I think that's why everyone is so shocked about it," her boyfriend Sam Edgely said.

Earlier in the night Mathilda had been speaking to Sam on the phone.

"Everyone's kind of in shock [and] doesn't really want to believe it," he said.

Mathilda is in an induced coma with serious head injures.

Friends have started an online campaign with the hashtag #prayformathilda.

The accident happened at the same intersection where, Luke Hunt, the fiance of model Samantha Harris, hit and killed a 78-year-old driver two years ago.
