RAC asks drivers for danger roads

The RAC is calling for examples of dangerous roads in the South West with more than half of the road deaths in WA this year happening in regional areas.

Residents have until Thursday to nominate a risky road or intersection.

RAC corporate affairs general manager Will Golsby said the results would be used to advocate for specific road upgrades to the State Government.

Mr Golsby said making sure South West roads were safe was essential to help reduce the State’s road toll. In the past three years, 57 people have died after crashes on South West roads.

“So far this year, 53 per cent of Western Australia’s road fatalities have occurred in regional areas, despite only 22 per cent of the population living there, ” Mr Golsby said.

“Already this year, 32 people have died on regional roads, that is nine more than this time last year.

“There is over 187,000 kilometres of road in Western Australia and no one knows it better than the people who drive, ride, cycle or walk on it every day.”

Mr Golsby said the State needed to build “forgiving” roads so if people made a mistake it was not deadly.

The RAC has also revealed some key statistics for the South West. Last year, 67 per cent of crashes were in high speed zone and 66 per cent of crashes involved single vehicles running off the road.

Since the Risky Roads campaign began on April 12, the RAC has received thousands of nominations including in the South West. However, it will wait until the end of the campaign to reveal the results.
