Open fire station: peek behind the scenes

Firefighter Tim Negri gives us a preview before the open day at the Geraldton Fire Station on Sunday.

Geraldton’s young and old will have their chance to go behind the scenes at the Geraldton Fire Station this weekend.

The doors will be open from 10am on Sunday, with people invited to get up close and personal with the fire station’s specialist vehicles, equipment and clothing.

Firefighter Tim Negri said the open day was a perfect opportunity for the community to meet both career and volunteer staff members.

“This is a rare occurrence to meet both career and volunteer firefighters and to ask questions about the industry too,” he said.

“There will be a display of our equipment and trucks which will also give people the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes — especially the kids, they love it.”

The event is part of International Firefighter’s Day, which was initiated in remembrance of five firefighters who died in a bush fire in 1999.

Demonstration of rescue equipment, including the “jaws of life”, will be on display at noon.
