Community members are invited to join Geraldton Anglican Cathedral for a sunrise service at the Foreshore on Easter Sunday.

Bishop and Acting Dean Gary Nelson said he hoped the outdoor service would become an annual tradition.

The Bishop of the Diocese of North West Australia said the service was an opportunity to hold an event out in the community.

“It’s a way of highlighting the great facilities we have here in Geraldton,” he said.

“In terms of Easter Sunday, it was around dawn when the women came to the tomb and found it empty.”

Bishop Nelson said the Easter message was particularly relevant in recent times, with the Malaysian Airlines plane missing, problems in the Middle East, and Cyclone Ita and subsequent flooding in Queensland.

“Easter gives us hope in difficult times and in death because of what Jesus has done in dying for us,” he said.

Bishop Nelson hoped to improve on last year’s numbers and see more than 100 people congregate early on Sunday morning.

“Everyone is welcome, just bring along a chair and a rug,” he said.

The service will take place from 6am on the Foreshore, next to the Champion Bay Surf Life Saving Club.

A BYO barbecue breakfast will follow, with people encouraged to enjoy a meal of fish in bread.

Easter Sunday services will also be held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross at 9.30am and 5pm.
