Amphlett's legacy lives on with 'I Touch Myself Project'

Late Australian Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett’s hit song 'I Touch Myself' has been re-recorded to promote breast cancer awareness.

Ten of Australia's most loved singers have joined forces for the new I Touch Myself Project to promote self-examination and breast cancer awareness.

“It was an anthem of sexual empowerment for women, and I guess it actually is that still… it’s still empowerment for women, from a slightly different angle,” Deborah Conway said.

Amphlett's cousin Little Patty recorded the song alongside breast cancer survivor Olivia Newton John and Kate Cebrano.

“I know that it will save lives… what better way to be exploited as an artist than to help save lives?,” Kate Cebrano said.

This year alone, 15,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but early detection has made a massive difference to the survival rate, which now stands at 90 per cent.

“What women are searching for is something that’s abnormal for them, so we really encourage women to get to know their own breasts and changes that might mean there's something there,” said xx from the Cancer Council.

“Who wouldn't love it, it’s your voice beyond the grave, it’s your legacy, it’s a way of turning your death into something incredibly useful and profound and effecting and hopefully life saving,” Deborah Conway said.

Amphlett passed away last year at age 53 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.
