Police appeal for community help

Major Crime Squad Detective Sergeant Mat Atkinson speaks to the media, appealing for assistance into the 23-year unsolved death mystery of Albany man Mark Gregory.

Major Crime Squad police say they are investigating the tragic hit-and-run death of Albany man Mark Gregory with a clean slate and have again appealed to the public to help solve the 23-year mystery into his death.

Mr Gregory, 28, was killed in the early hours of April 7, 1991, on Mercer Road as he walked home from a party and was found by a passing motorist at 4.55am with injuries consistent with being hit with a motor vehicle.

His unsolved hit-and-run case was reopened in 2009 with fresh information which was followed by a public plea for information from his family in 2011.

Twelve months ago, Albany Detectives said they believed Mr Gregory’s death was most likely murder and multiple suspects had been identified from new lines of enquiry.

Major Crime Squad officers arrived in Albany last week hoping to piece together the circumstances surrounding Mr Gregory’s death.

Detective Sergeant Mat Atkinson yesterday said the investigation was not being treated as a murder but accepted there was obvious aspects of criminality.

“We know somebody has knowledge of what has occurred on that night,” he said.

“There is criminality linked to the death in the fact there are injuries which are consistent with being hit by a motor vehicle and no motor vehicle was there when he was found by the person who reported it to police.”

Det. Sgt Atkinson said the review by Albany detectives — which helped identify multiple suspects — had been the “impetus” behind a review of the case.

“We have conducted a full review with fresh eyes and we are coming in with an open slate,” he said.

“Clearly somebody has been living with guilt, somebody has been living with this tremendous burden for 23 years and it may not just be one person involved, it may be they have told somebody else about what has occurred.”

Mr Gregory’s family including high-school sweetheart Leanne and their two children Casey Greay and Zane Gregory have been seeking closure for more than two decades.
