Sporting schemes help rural athletes
Regional athletes and sporting clubs are reaping the benefits of two new schemes that help athletes pursue their sporting dreams and boost the equipment stocks of local clubs.
Part of the Supporting Community Sport initiative, the Athlete Travel Subsidy Scheme supports talented regional athletes who are keen to pursue regional, State and national representation.
The Community Sporting Club Equipment Subsidy Scheme gives regional sporting clubs access to a one-off $500 subsidy to be spent on increasing or upgrading shared sporting equipment which is accessible to all club members.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said he was thrilled with the response to the initiative, which opened in December last year.
"In the first round, 80 regional athletes received a travel subsidy and 212 regional clubs in 46 sports around the State will now have money to purchase new equipment," Mr Waldron said.
"This means more support for people participating in sport and recreation around the State, which, as we know, has an array of benefits."
Applications for the second regional round of the Community Sporting Club Equipment Subsidy Scheme close on April 24. Applications for the second regional round of the Athlete Travel Subsidy Scheme open on April 15 and close on May 16.
Funded by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program, the $2 million initiative is being delivered by the Department of Sport and Recreation through the department's nine regional offices.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said sport and recreation clubs provided an important social and health role in regional communities by bringing people together and keeping them connected and active.
First round recipients have now been notified.
