Amphlett up for Glory reunion

ECU Joondalup midfielder Tommy Amphlett is looking forward to taking on his former club when Perth Glory travel to the ECU Sports Ground for a National Premier Leagues WA clash on Saturday.

Amphlett kicked off his NPL WA season in fine form with two goals in last weekend’s 3-3 draw against Cockburn City and is eagerly anticipating the match against Glory, who drew with Perth, 1-1, in their season opener.

“It will be a great contest with both sides looking to get their first wins on the board,” Amphlett said.

“I had a great time at the club and I believe it’s made me a better player but I’ll be looking forward to this game and getting one over them.

“They have a talented young side that have played together all season in the National Youth League, so we will need to be at our best.”

Glory, who have fielded an age-restricted team in the inaugural NPL WA season, included A-League players Riley Woodcock and Cameron Edwards in the team last week.

Amphlett spent three seasons in the A-League with Glory, playing 27 games. The 25-year-old, who became a father last year, had offers from clubs in Asia but knocked them back to be with his partner Lydie and their son, Jaxon.

“My agent was contacted by a couple of clubs in Asia but they didn’t fit into my plans at the time,” he said.

“It’s been a hectic year for me but I thought it would be better to stay in Perth and play for Joondalup, who have been great to me since I left the Glory ... I want to do my bit in bringing success to the club.”
