Earth turns for Mt Lawley

Year 4 student Annabel Cheuk can't wait until Year 6 when she can start the 2015 school year at the new Mt Lawley Primary School.

She was among students helping Education Minister Peter Collier shovel the first sod yesterday to begin work on rebuilding the school destroyed by fire 18 months ago.

"I'm really excited because I've seen some plans for the new school and they look fantastic," she said.

Mr Collier said the $11.2 million school would retain some of the site's heritage but include modern technology.

He said the project was taking slightly longer than usual because the community wanted to retain the 100-year-old school's facade.

It will have 12 classrooms, an administration area, medical room and activity areas in two storeys.

Principal Don Barba said it was one more step in an emotional journey for students, staff and parents and it was something special to start a new era.
