New skies at planetarium
Visitors to Scitech can now immerse themselves in the mysteries of the universe with greater clarity than ever before.
A $1.47 million overhaul of the planetarium means viewers can get a better and brighter experience of the solar system and beyond.
Dale Christian College and Floreat Park Primary School students were at the first viewing in the revamped theatre yesterday.
"That was the best thing ever," one student said, after watching a clip compiled by planetarium designer SkyScan and the International Planetarium Society.
The six-minute clip included 3-D visions of satellites and Earth landscapes.
Scitech chief executive Alan Brien said the upgrade, largely funded by a $1.3 million Lotterywest grant, brought the latest technology to the 25-year-old facility.
"A lot of people would recognise the theatre as the old Omni space," he said."In the Omni days, the theatre was analogue. Scitech took it on and it became the Horizon Planetarium in 2004 and we have now upgraded it to digital technology."
Visitors can see the new planetarium these school holidays, when it will have shows on aviation and wild weather.
