School reforms at risk

The Abbott Government has confirmed a revamp of Labor's school funding reforms is on the cards, despite the coalition promising in the lead-up to polling day it was on a "unity ticket" to support the changes.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne last night branded the reforms an "absurd mess", with only NSW, South Australia and the ACT fully signed up to the new model.

Mr Pyne said the former government had not signed bilateral deals or implementation plans with Victoria and Tasmania as required under law to calculate how much schools would get.

Nor had a memorandum of understanding or implementation plan been agreed to with Catholic schools.

WA, Queensland and the Northern Territory failed to reach agreement.
