Leavers go off air

Security cameras have been scrapped from leavers buses for the coming celebrations after a trial last year.

Dunsborough police Sergeant Craig Anderson said poor signal reception was behind the decision not to bring back 30 CCTV cameras on dedicated leavers transport this year.

They were introduced to curb unruly and anti-social behaviour and images were streamed to the incident control centre.

Sgt Anderson said the local mobile phone tower struggled with extra traffic from the cameras together with mobile phone use from 8000 leavers and additional tourists for the Margaret River Gourmet Escape.

“We could get vision and at times it worked really well but at times it was very ad hoc,” he said.

“We decided not to invest again this year.”

Security and volunteers will continue to monitor the buses and the entertainment zone will still be under CCTV surveillance.

Leavers runs from November 25 to November 28.
