Dance artist makes right moves to chase dream

Perth dance artist Aimee Smith has won a golden opportunity to turn a dream into reality by working with some of Britain's best creative minds.

Smith was one of five national winners of the British Council's Realise Your Dream Awards announced on Wednesday night.

The 2004 WA Academy of Performing Arts graduate said she hoped to explore ways in which the arts could help improve the environment.

Smith recently completed a masters degree in sustainability after travelling to the Arctic on a research vessel. In her recent production Wintering, about the emotional effects of climate change, Smith used recycled materials and offered incentives for patrons to ride bikes or catch public transport to her shows.

Selected from 750 applicants, she won $5000 cash and a trip to Britain to work with arts-sustainability experts Julie's Bicycle and Tipping Point UK.

"I have been experimenting with how I can bring sustainability into the way I make my work or in the way I invite audiences to see the work," Smith said.

She wants to create shows that inspire or empower people without preaching to them. "I'm finding treading that fine line is a difficult thing, which is why I want to spend some time with these organisations," Smith said.
