Weightlifter Li grabs second gold for China at worlds

WROCLAW (Poland) (AFP) - Li Yajun gave China their second gold at the world weightlifting championships here by winning the women's under 53kg title on Monday night.

It was second title for the Chinese after Tan Yayun won the women's under 48kg category on Sunday.

North Korea's Olympic champion Om Yun-chol took gold in the men's under 56kg.

Li lifted 100kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk to end the competition with a total of 221kg.

Olympic bronze medallist Cristina Iovu of Azerbaijan, who represented Moldova at the 2012 London Games, also lifted 221kg. The eventual winner was decided on the competitor's weight. Thailand's Sopita Tanasan took bronze.

In the men's event, Om Yun-chol won gold by lifting 289kg (127/162), to deprive China of a third gold with Long Qingquan winning silver and Vietnam's Kim Tuan Thach bronze.

China are looking to consolidate their status as favourites after winning five gold medals at the 2012 Olympics and four titles at the last worlds.
