Ratings slump for Cyrus' SNL appearance

Miley Cyrus' much hyped Saturday Night Live performance marked a ratings slump.

The 20-year-old singer doubled as host and musical guest on the US comedy sketch show, winning mixed reviews from critics.

According to ratings company Deadline, the show was down four per cent compared with last week's episode with musical guest Arcade Fire and SNL veteran Tina Fey returning to host.

The program was delayed 27 minutes on America's East Coast due to a football game, perhaps helping to drive down the number of viewers.

As many expected, Cyrus raised eyebrows with her return to the popular show, which included the star "twerking" during an oversexed spoof of US Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

Cyrus also addressed her controversial performance at August's MTV Video Music Awards.

"I don't apologise for my VMA performance. If I owe anyone apology, it's the people who make the bottom half of shirts," she said.

The singer performed her latest single Wrecking Ball and an acoustic version of her dance hit We Can't Stop in between skits.

Cyrus' new album, Bangerz, is scheduled for release on Tuesday.

She followed the SNL appearance with another on the Today Show in New York, complete with foam finger and short shorts. Her outfit was so skimpy she even revealed her white lace underwear. In an accompanying interview with the Today Show anchor Matt Lauer , Miley revealed that she'll continue her "sexual" performances to at least 40."Probably around 40, I heard that's when people don't have sex any more. So I guess maybe around then," the star said.
