Thieves used a stolen Landcruiser to smash their way into a northern suburbs shopping centre overnight in an unsuccessful attempt to steal an ATM.

The thieves smashed through the front doors of the Carramar Village centre on Joondalup Drive around midnight and attempted to drag away a free-standing ATM using a rope or chain.

The machine was dropped outside the shopping centre and they did not get any money.

Police believe the vehicle was stolen earlier in the night from a sports centre in Iluka.

The Landcruiser was last seen heading west on Joondalup Drive and may have been accompanied by a black Commodore utility, police said.

The licence plate number of the Landcruiser is 1DAV448.

Investigations are continuing.
