Kununurra gymnasts bound for Broome

Kununurra Leisure Centre was filled with pint-sized gymnasts flipping and bending to the best of their abilities on Tuesday, finalising their routines before travelling to Broome to compete.

A group of 10 gymnasts from Kununurra will travel to Broome for the North West Regional Gymnastics Association Invitational competition on October 6 and 7.

With sparkling leotards and keen determination, the Kununurra representatives will compete in a range of levels.

Kununurra Gymnastics coach Beck Foulkes-Taylor said gymnasts would compete at levels two, three, four, five and the men's division.

Ariana Hamilton-Smith, 15, is a national level four at Kununurra gymnastics club, who will compete in Broome for the second year in a row.

There is also eight-year-old Marcus Salerno who is the only male travelling to Broome this year, with the nine other female competitors.

Over the event, participants will take part in a training session on Friday, competition over the weekend and additional education classes on the Monday.

"The clinics are optional, but it's such a great opportunity for the kids to learn from the judges who are coming up from Perth," Foulkes-Taylor said.

Sarah Recklies, 13, who is a club level four, said she was looking forward to showing off a new routine set for all competitors.

"It's a routine everyone does in the same level, when you go up a level the routine changes," she said. "They are pretty good in Broome - we went last year."

Penelope Wardrop, 13, is a club level five and said that her routine had changed this year because she moved up a level.

"It's different because I'm in a higher level, but I think because we went last year it will still be a bit easier," she said
