A Kununurra boxer has maintained his unbeaten record since debuting earlier this year, winning his latest fight in Darwin on a split-points decision.

Jimmy Early, who fought in the 75kg division, defeated Darwin-based Michael Rockwood last week, taking his record to two wins and zero losses after debuting with a win in June.

The fight was part of a night put on by Cyclone Boxing Gym that saw Northern Territory fighters take on challengers from South Australia, Tasmania and WA.

Early said he had taken up boxing training at the beginning of 2013, but had ramped up his training load in the six weeks leading up to his latest fight.

"I did a lot more running and started doing a lot more sparring in light rounds … we try to get through 10 to 12 rounds a night," he said.

"We go lighter than usual just to get more in, and I think that helped me a lot."

The 22-year-old said he was pleased with the win, describing his opponent as a good fighter with a walk-forward style.

"He didn't have the best lateral movement … he more just walks in and punches, but he was still a difficult opponent," he said.

"My strengths are probably my speed and my reach."

Early said he had escaped without any injuries or too much soreness, and was straight back into training just a few days after the fight.

He said he was now eyeing another bout in Darwin later next month.

"I'm just winging it, doing it because I like it, and when fights come up like the ones in Darwin, I'll take them," he said.

Early is one of half a dozen local boxers who have taken up training in the backyard gym of fellow fighter Jesse Cox.

Cox, who recently won his own fight in Broome, said the club was going well and was yet to lose since first sending boxers to competitions in June.

He encouraged anyone interested in learning and joining in the boxing training, which runs four nights a week, to call him on 0439 758 045.
