Mango madness in Broome
For nearly three decades, Broome has taken a mouth-watering bite into one of the juiciest events in the Kimberley social calendar, the Broome Mango Festival.
The festival is hosted by the Lions Club of Broome and celebrates the exotic fruit with a plethora of events.
This year, locals will sink their teeth into another slice of mango fever when the festival returns to mark its 27th anniversary, running from November 21 to 24.
The festival's signature events, the Great Chefs of Broome and the Great Bartenders of Broome, will be back along with mango tasting, a mango quiz night, mango jams, cakes and chutneys.
Last year, organisers launched the White Ribbon Day Gala and Charity Auction, raising more than $17,000 for various local organisations involved with prevention of family violence. The glitzy event will be held again.
The Great Chefs of Broome will return to Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa this year, while the Great Bartenders event will be back at Zoo Bar and Cafe.
Lions Club of Broome president Chris Mitchell said over its history, the Mango Festival had become one of Broome's favourite annual events.
"The Broome Mango Festival was started back in 1986 as a way of boosting the Kimberley's mango industry, raising funds for charity and building community spirit at a time of year when things are slowing down."
