Students finalise banners, as competition set to be close

Charthouse Primary School students, Josh Sellers, Jessica Goodwin and Kallum Jakovic, all 10, are busy putting the final touches on the banners for the competition.

Bursts of colour, tubes of paint and big smiles filled the art classroom at Charthouse Primary School, as children proudly finished off their entries for the annual City of Rockingham banner competition.

A number of schools across Rockingham took place in the competition and the banners will be displayed on poles on Read Street outside Rockingham Senior High School, for the public to see.

Baldivis artist Amy Hamersley, who assisted in the project, said the schools were working on two banners and representing the theme of ‘Healthy people, healthy places’.

“We asked the kids questions like, what do they think is healthy living, mentally and physically and that was reflected on the banner,” she said.

Charthouse visual art teacher Charlotte Soraine said it was nice to see the children coming up with ideas about healthy living and relate it to things in their life.

“Art is quite good for kids as it is less restricted and they get to express themselves — it’s important to validate their work by hanging it up and saying, this has meaning,” she said.

Student Ayushis Gendah, 10, said she loved the painting and the combination of the themes, where she learned about sponsor Act Belong Commit’s message.

Classmate Darcy Clements, also 10, said she lived a healthy lifestyle and was involved in a lot of sports but being physically healthy is just as important as being mentally healthy.

The awards night takes place tonight and Ms Soraine said this year the students had been amazing and it would be hard to pick a winner.
