Broome Speedway Club has introduced a new division to their range of disciplines, with children as young as five-years-old now able to take part in the sport.

The junior quarter midgets racing class is catered for children from 5 to 14-years-old, with a range of new safe kids' cars making their way to Broome from the United States.

The club have installed a new kids-specific 120m track on the inside of the main track on Broome Highway, with 120cc vehicles the source of a lot of fun for local youngsters.

Broome Speedway Club's BK Halliday said that the new division was great to get children involved in the sport at an earlier age.

"Up until now it has been impossible for kids to get involved in speedway until they are 10 to 12-years-old," he said.

"It is one of the safest sports to get kids involved in, with the competitors wearing full safety gear and enclosed in a roll cage.

"The vehicles are cheap to run and you don't need to be mechanically minded to maintain them."

Torque Wear Motorsports have two vehicles for sale currently and interested participants are able to have a test run in one of the existing competition cars.

Broome Speedway is gearing up for its biggest event of the year this weekend, with their meeting to coincide with Shinju Matsuri happening tomorrow and Saturday.

Competitors across all age grades will take part, with interested parties coming from as far as Albany to take part. Gates open at 4pm, at the speedway track on Broome Highway.
