Road to Discovery audition this weekend

Kalgoorlie-Boulder may be known for digging up precious metal, but six musicians are hoping the city will deliver them a golden opportunity this weekend.

The local heat of the Telstra Road to Discovery competition will be held at the Boulder Market Day on Sunday from 10am and will showcase the selected musicians' ability.

The winner of the heat will travel to Sydney with 17 other heat winners from around the country to take part in a three-day music boot camp.

Local musician Kristen Fragar, 26, will be entering the competition playing on an instrument slightly out of her comfort zone.

"I've played saxophone and clarinet nearly my whole life and I lead the Kalgoorlie Community Show band so my background is definitely on the instrumental side of things," Ms Fragar said.

"In the competition I will be playing guitar and singing so it will be a little different to what I've done in the past, but hopefully it will turn out well.

"Hopefully I can make it to the boot camp round because I really want to record an album of my own in the next 12 months and I think it would help me achieve that goal."

Another young local singer, Jennifer Renee Hannam, 16, is also hoping to reach the boot camp stage of the competition.

"I've been doing gigs for about three years now and I'm leaning towards the alternative rock side of music," she said. "I'm hoping to reach the boot camp stage so I can meet a few more industry professionals and learn the ins and outs of what it means to be a professional musician.

"If I make it to that stage, who knows where it could lead me?"

Other musicians performing include Dali Frost and Dismal Society's Ethan Kavanagh, as well as Perth singer Karin Page.

The prize at the end of the road will make many of the musicians' years of practice all worth it, with a chance to open for Bon Jovi on their upcom- ing Australian tour in December.

The ultimate performance winner and one songwriter winner will each receive a 12 month music mentorship, including a return trip and showcase performance at the Americana Music Festival plus a $14,000 tailored music development fund.
