Woman gets hair stuck in moving escalator after fainting

A 32-year-old New York woman has been badly injured after fainting on a escalator and getting her hair tangled in the stair's metal teeth.

The unnamed woman, who suffers from epilepsy, had just stepped onto the escalator at the Broadway subway station in New York when she unexpectedly fainted.

Reports suggest that shortly after the woman fell, her hair became entangled in the metal teeth of the escalator's stairs as it continued moving upward.

A large chunk of her hair was ripped from her head.

Emergency workers had to shut off the escalator in order to free the woman.

She was carried to a waiting ambulance on a stretcher.

'She seemed in pain,' one passer-by told the New York Daily News.

'She was wearing shorts and one of her legs was all cut up. After today, I’ll probably take the stairs from now on,' another onlooker said.

The woman is said to have suffered cuts to her legs, arms and face as a result of the incident.

She was taken to Harlem hospital where she was listed as in a stable condition.

The escalator was closed temporarily following the incident.
