14 confirmed dead at premiere of Dark Knight Rises: report

US Police have confirmed that up to 14 people have been shot dead at the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Denver.

Two masked gunmen stormed into the movie theatre shortly before the midnight screening was about to begin and opened fire on a sold-out cinema.

14 people have been confirmed dead and at least 50 others attending the screening have been wounded.

Radio host Brenda Stuart said:

"This started with a midnight showing of the new Dark Knight movie and the theatres were packed that were showing this movie.

"People inside tell us they thought it was part of the movie. They heard what they thought were firecrackers, loud bangs and all of a sudden they saw the bullets flying.

"Police officers are carting the injured to the hospital in their own cars, not waiting for the ambulances."

A radio host has already spoken and suggested that victims were shot dead, although reports also suggest there may have also been an explosion.

She also said police are looking for a second explosive device at the movie theatre.

A makeshift hospital has been set up nearby to assist the treatment of wounded victims before they are transported to several hospitals. At least four have been taken to a 'children's hospital'.

Surrounding parking lots have been closed off by police as snigger dogs are brought in to search a vehicle for a suspected explosive device.

While a suspect has reportedly been detained, investigations are continuing. Police have warned the public not to approach the second gunman, who is on the run.

More to come.
