Prime Minister heckled in Punchbowl

The Prime Minister has been heckled during a news conference in south-western Sydney.

Julia Gillard was revealing details about the Federal Government's crackdown on gang related crime.

On day-four of her western Sydney blitz, the Prime Minister experienced first hand, some of the anger in the community.

"You're full on it, full of it," the woman said.

The Prime Minister was in Punchbowl to announce plans to crackdown on gangs.

She wants the state governments to hand over their criminal gang powers to the Commonwealth.

"National laws are needed, because obviously gangs work nationally," Ms Gillard said.

The plan would include a national firearm database to track illegal guns, and give police greater authority to seize items suspected of being the product of criminal activity.

"They would require individuals to bear the onus of describing where their wealth and assets came from," the Prime Minister said.

Julia Gillard received support today on one of her other policies, the 457 visas.

One Nation founder Pauline Hanson is backing the Prime Minister's push to fill jobs vacancies with Australians before turning to foreign workers.

Ms Hanson says she feels vindicated after previously warning against bringing in foreign workers.

"I want to see Australian workers put first, full stop that's it," Ms Gillard said.

While the Opposition Leader said there has been a significant increase in 457 visas over the last couple of years.

"This is a government which appears to be hypocritical on this subject," Tony Abbott said.

Ms Hanson's backing hasn't impressed some Labor MPs, who clearly want to distance themselves from her support.

"Well she's irrelevant to the public debate," Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said.

"I find most of her view reprehensible."
