A Reynella mother has described her tragic end to Mothers Day after a fire ravaged her home late last night.

The fire began at about 11.30 last night, when a candelabra came too close to an artificial flower arrangement.

"The candelabra was a standing one, and there was a dried flower arrangement and they say that it caught on fire, the flower arrangement, and then it fell on the floor and went from there," homeowner, Lisa Whyatt said.

Lisa, a mother of three, tried to put the fire out, but had to escape with her friend out the back door.

"I tried to put it out but kept fumbling," she said.

"My whole lounge was engulfed with orange flames, there were explosions of glass, crackling from loud bangs – my neighbours actually thought someone was trying to break in at first."

"They came out to try and see, and then realized the fire was on their fence as well."

Her 11-year-old son had left to spend the night at his father's house, something which Lisa is thankful for, as his room is near the lounge room and was badly damaged.

"I’ve lost all my lounge, and my kitchen and my dining pretty much all my souvenirs, laptops and printers."

"Everything from the kitchen, dining, lounge room and laundry."

The damage bill has been estimated at $150,000.
