Hundreds of taxi drivers protest over assaults

Hundreds of taxi drivers have held a protest out the front of the Kurralta Park shopping centre today, angered over an early morning assault on three drivers this morning.

They gathered just before dawn outside the shops after the alleged assault took place at one o'clock this morning out the front of HQ nightclub on the corner of North Tce and West Tce.

At the protest, three drivers said they were assaulted out the front of the nightclub by 10 - 12 clubbers.

Two of the drivers were taken to hospital with injuries and the other driver was treated at the scene.

The three drivers claim the police present did not attempt to help them.

"We kept asking for ambulance, they didn't bother to call an ambulance," one of the drivers, Charanibir Singh, said.

The protesting drivers said security is a huge issue for them and that their cars are attacked most nights.

A representative from the Taxi Council visited the protest, but tempers flared and the drivers threatened to take their protest onto streets in the city.

But later this afternoon, the protesting group met with police and government representatives and made their case for better representation on the taxi council and more police security.
