A mythical beast rumoured to be lurking under Lake Windermere is believed to have been captured for the first time on camera.

Tom Pickles, a kayaker, has claimed he shot the mysterious "Bownessie" while it was emerging from the depths of Lake Windermere near Bowness in Cumbria.

The grainy picture shows a monstrous humped shape gliding through the misty lake, very reminiscent of the eerie photos of Scotland’s Loch Ness monster.

24-year-old Pickles says he first thought it was a dog but was petrified when he realised the “creature” appeared to be the size of three cars.

He and fellow kayaker Sarah Harrington, 23, say they were so scared, they raced back to the safety of the shore.

"Each hump moved in a rippling movement and it appeared to have a huge shadow around it suggesting it was much bigger underwater," Pickles told The Sun.

This is believed to be the eighth sighting in the past five years of the mysterious hump-backed "beast".

Bownessie, similar to the famed Nessie monster of Loch Ness in Scotland, has long been part of local folklore.
