‘Red means stop’: Driver smashes into back of car

Dashcam footage has captured the moment a driver slammed into a car after it stopped abruptly on a fast moving Sydney highway.

The accident is said to have occurred on Old Windsor Road just out of Sydney on September 24.

The driver of the white sedan said she stopped suddenly because her side mirror was about to fall off.

Social media users were quick to point out the slow reaction time of the Dashcam owner.

Patrick Phuntawat, posted the footage online and said “I was driving on old Windsor road in the right hand lane at 80kph.

“It was really dark as there were only limited street lights. I saw the brake light of the car in front so I slowed down, but seconds later I found out that the car was stopped for no reason without any signal and I could not break in time," Mr Phuntawat said.

Coming in hot: The driver of the white sedan claimed she stopped to fix her side mirror.

"She also said that she stopped for two minutes with hazard lights on. The dashcam video clearly shows she stopped and there was no hazard lights or anything at all. We can see that the car in front of her is not breaking.

"Stopping distance for car travelling 80 kph is 53 metres or 13 car lengths. We've always been taught to stop in the left lane. Is stopping on the right lane in 80 zone safe? Is the reason to stop good enough for an 80 zone?"

Looking for justification, Mr Phuntawat asked Facebook users if her reason was “good enough to stop in an 80 zone”.

The majority of the 186 comments were rather condemning of his reaction times.

“Why the hell would you stop there in the right hand lane without any indication of a problem, using hazards or slowing at a suitable speed?" Caitlin Eason commented.

"I'd say mobile phone more than likely had something to do with this one or extremely bad judge of speed and distance," another said.
