Sydney woman allegedly stalked by ex before her body was found

A Sydney hairdresser was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband because she recently converted to Christianity.

Nasrin Abek had separated from her 42-year-old husband and was allegedly stalked by him before she was found dead in her Potts Point apartment on Thursday.

The couple arrived in Australia from Iran four years ago and were on bridging visas when Abek made the decision to convert to a different religion, which apparently angered her husband.

“This poor woman’s been stabbed to death in her home, metres from where I sleep and why couldn’t I do anything about that?,” neighbour Edward Davison said.

“(Police) asked if I’d heard screaming, heard an argument. I hadn’t.”

It’s alleged Amir Darbanou repeatedly stabbed his wife to death in their ground floor apartment. He then rang his step-father in Iran who alerted police in Australia.

“I said ‘did you kill your wife?’ … because I was angry and wanted an answer. He was standing there looking very calm, cool, collected,” Mr Davison said.

Darbanou is due back in court next month, charged with murder.
